Al Jazeera America: I’m sad to see you go

Tags :

January 13, 2016 was a painful day for me. I had heard rumors, but was really disappointed to see in print that Al Jazeera America was actually closing down in April. And, now … that day has come and I am so sad. What a huge loss.

They say, “all good things must come to an end”… but, I am not ready to let go. I grew to respect and love this network and all that it stood for. And even entertained the idea of applying for a job with them after I finished grad school. The programming was excellent. I learned so much about the world from their balanced coverage and informative shows. I was so depressed when I learned about the closure that I didn’t want to accept it and now that it’s right in front of my face the reality is hitting hard. And, I know I’m not alone. But, I wish more Americans had been open-minded and less judgmental. If so, AJA would still be a viable network and, in my humble opinion, a leading one. No other network compares when it comes to balanced coverage.

Al Jazeera America did not just showcase the slanted opinions of top leaders and high level corporate types. The journalists at AJA interviewed regular people and shared their views. I wish more Americans had tuned in…they would have been hooked by the professionalism, charm, and wide-ranging subject matter. But, unfortunately, people who watch the likes of Fox News and listen to creepy conservative talk show hosts do not think for themselves. No, they allowed their minds to be poisoned and wouldn’t even consider watching Al Jazeera America. Sad. Very sad.

That said, I am grateful that I have an open-mind and that I tuned in for excellent coverage produced by the amazing network staff. Thank you, Al Jazeera America! I will continue to follow AJ+, but you and the American crew will be greatly missed in my daily routine. Wishing you all the very best … wherever you land. Good night and good bye.

Sami Yusuf: The Gift of Love

Tags :

With all of the savagery in the world right now, a glimpse of hope from the Middle East was brought to us by Sami Yusuf … a new song called “The Gift of Love”. Just before Valentine’s Day and in the midst of horror-gripping news items about beheadings and burning people alive we were presented with this amazing song. Unfortunately, even though many of us tweeted and posted about the “The Gift of Love” on social media the song did not generate a peep in the US news cycle. I am bitterly disappointed in that. It is as though the media outlets only want to focus on barbaric acts. How can love spread when we only produce, share, and “like” terror messages? Wake up my friends!

I would prefer to see a song like “Gift of Love” go viral versus some crazy thing said or done by a celebrity. I tried to help “Gift of Love” go viral and was psyched when SamiYusufOfficial retweeted my tweet (see below).

But, I was very disappointed when I did a google search and realized that the only news items I could find were from news outlets in the Middle East. And, sadly … there were only a few:

Gulf News – “Samii Yusuf Releases his “Gift of Love” (Feb 3, 2015)

Gulf News – “Sami Yusuf’s blessed life” (Feb 5, 2015)

Arab News – “La Giordania unisce le tre fedi in un video di 3 minuti” (Feb 14, 2015)

Humankind better wake up and realize that we can blame the media all we want, but it is also up to each of us to “be the change you wish to see in the world”. How many people in the world know that the first week of February is now observed as World Interfaith Harmony Week? All thanks to King Abdullah II of Jordan, this week has been set aside. It is my hope that next year Sami will come out with a new song and slowly, but surely, a new wave of love will start to encircle the earth. A wave so strong that it will overcome the wave of violence so prominent in our world. I know that when I listen to the Gift of Love and let the interfaith message sink in … it soothes my soul. Please listen to the song and share. It’s never to late to make it go viral! I urge all my friends to listen to it. And, think about the message, let it sink deep into your soul and let it guide you as you interact with others day-to-day. Step by step, we can make a change in this world … it’s up to you and me!

Kudos to Brenda Wood and her Response to Coke Ad Haters!

Tags :

Brenda Wood’s response to the Coke ad haters was, in a word … BRILLIANT! Further, I learned something new about “America the Beautiful”.  Very interesting! Watch Brenda Wood’s classy counterpoint:

As a side note, I met Brenda Wood back in the early 90s. She was the president of the Southern Society of Adventist Communicators of which I was a member. She is the ultimate professional and a true class act. Back in the day, she put me in touch with Xernona Clayton (former corporate executive at Turner Broadcasting and Founder, President and CEO of the Trumpet Awards) when I had aspirations of working for CNN. All thanks to Brenda, I had the privilege of meeting Xernona which led to attending an event for the highly esteemed NBA basketball coach, Lenny Wilkens. I also met Ted Turner and Jane Fonda. And, Brenda made this all possible. She was a hero to me back in the day and is an even bigger hero to me today! Thank you, Brenda … for showing us what it means to be a true American! May God bless you and yours always and forever. You make me proud to be an American!

You are what you read …

Tags :

In a world that moves too fast, people often take in only headlines and move on. However, if you did that today from only one of the three examples below, you might have walked away with a totally different perspective. That’s why media literacy, taking in as many sources as possible, will help people arrive at a truth that works for them. Check out these examples and try this on your own! I dare you to look at three different sources (or more) on a news item and compare … and I don’t just mean reading the headlines. It’s time to dig deeper everyone! And, let me know your results! 🙂

Media Misogyny – Joe Scarborough goes off-the-rails on Mika Brzezinski

Mika & Joe Fight – it gets ugly!

Joe Scarborough Goes Off On Mika Brzezinski After She Asserts He’s ‘Being Chauvinistic’

I was outraged this morning by a discussion I heard on Morning Joe between Joe and Mika. It’s been on my mind all day … I’ve spoken to colleagues, read blog posts, and the constant stream of comments. Like Cher, I am steaming mad. Who the hell does Joe Scarborough think he is? He kept talking over Mika, bullying her in an intimidating fashion, snapping his fingers as he continued to railroad the conversation. He was totally unprofessional and lost it on live television. What brought on the meltdown was When Mika suggested that he was acting chauvinistic as he started making jokes and looking at his computer. She did not out-and-out call him a chauvinist, he was merely acting like one and she pointed it out. The same chauvinistic thoughts were running through my head when she said it to him. I also didn’t appreciate the laughter from the other males at the table. Pathetic.

A male friend of mine who watched the interview said that Joe reacted like a pubescent male whose fragile ego had been attacked. Joe got so angry, that he had to retreat to the bathroom to cool down. Hm. Meanwhile, Mika maintained her composure even though she was the one who was under attack.

Men in the media, like Joe (and Chris Matthews), who speak in a condescending tone and do not allow women to speak their minds … are part of the problem. This whole discussion was really about how women lack representation in Washington. Even though women comprise 51% of the population, we only make up 17% of congress and the lack of women in the Cabinet under the Obama Administration’s second term – is disappointing. In fact, very disappointing. However, Joe has no room to stand. He may look as though he believes in equality when he has Mika at his side, but he wasn’t paying her an equal salary (that is, equal to the other men on the show) and she had to sue MSNBC to receive proper pay. Further, the way Joe and other male guests or regulars on the show treat Mika – is pathetic. Their body language and the way they speak to her is not respectful.

Last semester, I conducted a pilot study for a graduate level class. The title of my study was “Media Messages and Female Politicians”. As part of my research I analyzed the documentaries, “Miss Representation” and “Running in High Heels”. I was shocked to learn that the US is so far behind the times and discussions (fights) like the one that played out on Morning Joe today further substantiate the fact that women must stand up for one another, we must have a voice, we must not back down even when bullies like Joe Scarborough are attacking. Kudos to Mika! I doubt I could have stopped myself from slapping Joe. Mika maintained her cool, calm delivery, and once she got the chance to speak uninterrupted, her message came out loud and clear. Well-said, Mika! Let’s keep this discussion going … we need more women to speak up, more women to stand up to bullies like Joe! We need more women in power so that future Cabinet’s have a proper mix of men and women. More than anything – women need to support other women! NOW!

“My Neighborhood” by Just Vision Media

Tags :

I really want to see this film and the only place it is showing is in New York City (April 18-29, 2012) or Doha, Qatar (April 19-22, 2012). Why won’t theaters in the US show this film? What exactly are people afraid of? Why not show that some Israelis want peace with their neighbors? You sure as hell won’t see peaceful efforts being made on the news in the US. Why?

Please, watch the trailer and then ask your local theater to show this film. As a democracy we have failed to show that we are willing to see both sides of the story. It is time for that to change! What is it Gandhi said? “Be the change you wish to see.”

Tags :

Al Jazeera English is cancelling Riz Khan’s wonderful show … this is one of the best shows I have seen and I’m terribly disappointed in AJE for canceling it. Please check out the show above and stand up for Riz … we need people like Riz Khan who are willing to listen and respect different perspectives in this world!

We need Riz Khan’s show and many more like it … please, do not take away this show!
